Dave Garroway

The star of radio and television talks about his early years in Chicago at WMAQ where he had popular recorded music shows such as the 11:60 Club and developed Garroway-at-Large, the innovative “Chicago School of TV” series for early NBC-TV. He was born July 13, 1913 and was 62 when we spoke with him at the Palmer House Hotel in Chicago. He told how he was recruited to develop and host the Today Show on TV and, later, Wide, Wide World. He died July 21, 1982 at age 69.

  1. Thoroughly enjoyed Dave Garroway interview. Just wish I had lived in Chicago when he did the 1160 Club and Garroway at Large. Do you have any of those shows? It was amazing how much luck played in furthering his career. Of course all that talent didn’t hurt either. Thanks, Chuck.

  2. Garroway’s 11:60 Club on WMAQ was my first education in jazz. I’d listen almost every night, and because of him I became a radio announcer in college, and a professional musician, jazz, trumpet. His patter was absolutely knowledgeable and unique in his mastery of the language.
