Dick Haymes

Big band singer with the Harry James, Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey orchestras, he was heard on scores of radio remote broadcasts as well as on programs of his own, including Club 15 with the Andrews Sisters. He had nine Gold Records in the 1940s and co-starred in a number of film musicals. He was born September 13, 1918 and was 54 at the time of our conversation following a performance at the Blue Max in the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in suburban Chicago. He died March 28, 1980 at age 61.

The night of this broadcast I was a 7th grade 13 year old boy with my ear glued to the Atwater Kent radio in our living room. My Dad was reading the paper, my Mom was darning soxs and the war was upper most on our minds. Thanks so much for taking me back in time.
