Del Sharbutt
Recorded June 15th, 1988 - 62 min
One of radio’s top announcers during the golden age and beyond. He was born February 16, 1910 and was 78 when we had this conversation in his Palm Desert, California home. His voice was heard on such programs as Your Hit Parade, The Jack Benny Program, and Hobby Lobby. He was the man who developed “M-m-m-m good!” for Campbell’s Soup. He died April 26, 2002 at age 92.

Listening to this interview makes me nostalgic for hearing my grandfather’s voice in person! Thanks for keeping these pipes alive so future generations can come to know a voice so many were familiar with.

Let’s not forget his narration in the great railroad industrial film
The Modern Coal Burning Steam Locomotive!

What a treat it was to hear Del Sharbutt again. My “born-too-late” radio career began in 1964 as I worked my way through Mizzou’s J-School as a staff announcer at the now defunct KCGM Radio (“The Key to Columbia’s Good Music – 1360 on the RIGHT side of your radio dial”).
At any rate, my broadcasting mentors and role models at the time — unbeknownst to them — were Mutual Radio’s Westbrook Van Voorhis (“Time Marches On”), the sometimes besotted Tony Marvin and, of course, Del Sharbutt, proprietor of the best voice in radio, period!
So, thanks, Chuck, for this and all the other wonderful and heart-warming interviews you’ve conducted. You have spent your time well, my friend.

Oh, those pipes come through as golden as the old days. A real treat to hear this man again. I was sure he would end up in Texas but Palm Desert calls to many, many old timers.
